iHelp Homecoming Service Day | October 2, 2009 | Photos
Over 40 AAF members showed up to the Quad to participate in the University’s largest day of volunteering, grabbed their garbage picks and cleaned up the campus! While it wasn’t the most exciting project, we all had fun hanging out together and even went to Firehaus afterwards (Work hard, play harder!)
Food For Folks Dinner | November 1, 2009 | Photos
Five AAF members drove up to the Ronald McDonald House in Lincoln Park to cook dinner for the families staying there. We made chicken enchiladas, guacamole, and chocolate chip and pumpkin cookies, and everyone seemed to really enjoy it!
The Ronald McDonald House provides a place for families to stay while their children are being treated at Children’s Memorial Hospital. It’s definitely one of the most rewarding volunteer opportunities we’ve participated in and we hope to do it again! For more information, visit http://www.rmhccni.org
YWCA Shadow Day | November 11, 2009
Five AAF members participated in a shadow day event hosted by the campus YWCA. Everyone had a local high school student shadow them from 8-noon sitting in on classes and taking a tour of the quad. The whole idea behind the event was to get high school students familiarized with a college campus and a taste of what their future courses will be like.
OVP Thanksgiving Basket Donation | November 18, 2009 | Photos
AAF members generously donated some of their spare change to help fund a family’s Thanksgiving dinner. The Office of Volunteer Programs organized a fundraiser to donate laundry baskets full of Thanksgiving fixings for local families in need. With all of our members’ donations we were able to buy a complete Thanksgiving dinner with extra money for dessert to donate through the OVP. Thanks again to everyone who was generous enough to donate!
Crisis Nursery Christmas Tree Decorating | December 4, 2009 | Photos
A group of AAF members stuck it out in the cold one Friday afternoon to help decorate the huge evergreen tree in the backyard of the Crisis Nursery in Urbana. We spent a few hours filling the tree with tons of lights and ornaments until it looked perfect/we couldn’t stand the cold anymore!
The Crisis Nursery provides a secure shelter for young local children who are currently in unsafe living conditions due to a crisis situation at home. For more information about the nursery, visit http://www.crisisnursery.net
Crisis Nursery Holiday Store | December 12, 2009 & December 13, 2009 | Photos
4 groups of AAF members volunteered a few hours of their time to help out at the Crisis Nursery’s Holiday Store. The Nursery hosts a mini store at Lincoln Square Mall in Urbana for kids to come in and buy inexpensive gifts for their friends and family. We worked one-on-one with the kids which made the event all that much more enjoyable to participate in!
Relay for Life | April 23, 2010 | Photos
A group of AAF members spent over 12 hours on the track at the Armory to take a stand against cancer. AAF raised over $250 for the American Cancer Society and were recognized at the Awards Ceremony at 6 am. Even the fundraisers were a blast, including one at Joe's where we raised over $100!
AAF Philanthropy BBQ | April 30, 2010
Our last major event of the year was the Philanthropy BBQ supporting the Ronald McDonald House Charities, where over 20 members came out to enjoy great food, sand volleyball and a bag tournament. We thought it was a great way to raise money and have some fun doing it!
